Music Program

Music has the capacity to engage, inspire and enrich students, exciting the imagination and encouraging students to reach their creative and expressive potential.

The Mater Dei College Music Program allows students to manipulate, express and share sound as listeners, composers and performers.

The Program caters for students who have music experience and for those who are keen to learn an instrument for the first time.

Students explore, respond and investigate their cultural knowledge and understanding in a range of contexts through the Program, including access to the latest music software and equipment for creating and recording their own music. Students also have opportunities to perform and participate solo and in group ensembles to develop their aural and theory skills.

Private Music Tuition

Students have opportunities to further their skills through specialist individual instrumental/vocal lessons by Private Music Tuition.

Private Music Tuition includes 30-minute lessons on a weekly rotating timetable in the students chosen instrument. Lessons are held during class time and rotate weekly to ensure students don’t miss the same class every week.

Students are required to purchase their own musical instrument or can hire instruments from the College. String, woodwind and brass instruments are available for students to hire and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. All hire fees are non-refundable.

The College currently offers Private Music Tuition in the following instruments:

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • French Horn
  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Drums
  • Vocals (singing)

All students undertaking tuition are expected, as part of their role within College and under the discretion of the Director of Music, to be involved in at least one co-curricular ensemble.

Please note that Private Music Tuition is a year-long commitment. If a student decides to discontinue their lesson’s part way through the year, one full term’s notice is required in writing to the Director of Music.

Private Music Tuition Fees

Mater Dei College plays no part in the collection of fees for private music tuition. Music tutors will send out individual accounts to parents at the beginning of each term. Fees will need to be paid within two weeks of receiving the account.

The cost is $33 per lesson in 2023.

Any orchestral or Concert Band instrument as determined by the needs of the College is available under the Scheme. Piano and guitar (excluding bass guitar) are not eligible instruments.

As part of the Scheme, parents must pay for Terms 1 and 3 as outlined above in Private Music Tuition. Students must care for their instrument and practice regularly.
