Languages
Languages prepare students for life, career and travel, where a sound knowledge of language and culture is a great advantage.
At Mater Dei College, students study Languages through an exciting and engaging curriculum. Students can learn Japanese or Indonesian from Years 7 to Year 12.
Those opting to study Languages beyond Year 8 are also afforded unique opportunities to host visiting international students and gain in-country experience through embarking on international trips in Year 11.

Japanese
Years 7 to 10
In Japanese, students will learn the fundamental skills required to communicate basic themes. The topics include learning to; say the days of the week and months of the year; hobbies, sports and abilities; getting around (transport and places). These topics will help students continue to develop their skills for basic communication in terms of the Outcomes: Listening and Responding; Spoken Interaction; Viewing, Reading and Responding; and Writing.
Indonesian
Years 7 to 10
In Indonesian, students will learn the fundamental skills required to communicate basic themes. The topics include learning to; tell the time, speak about family environments, describe yourself, body and personal details. These topics will help students continue to develop their skills for basic communication in terms of the Outcomes: Listening and Responding; Spoken Interaction; Viewing, Reading and Responding; and Writing.
Japanese: Second Language ATAR
Years 11 & 12
The Japanese: Second Language ATAR course is designed to further develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the culture and the language of Japanese-speaking communities, providing them with opportunities to gain a broader and deeper understanding of Japanese and extend and refine their communication skills. The course focuses on the interrelationship of language and culture and equips students with the skills needed to function in an increasingly globalised society, a culturally and linguistically diverse local community, and provides them with the foundation for life-long language learning. Relevant and engaging tasks, delivered through a range of appropriate contexts and topics, develop literacy in the Japanese language as well as extend literacy development in English.

The Japanese: Second Language General course is designed to enable students to gain knowledge and an understanding of the culture and the language of Japanese-speaking communities. The course focuses on the interrelationship of language and culture and equips students with the skills needed to function in an increasingly globalised society, a culturally and linguistically diverse local community, and provides them with the foundation for life-long language learning.
