Home Economics
Offering a Certificate II in Hospitality, students at Mater Dei College can undergo professional Hospitality training – providing pathways to work in restaurants, cafés, clubs, hotels or food outlets.
Through the vast array of functions within the Mater Dei calendar, Hospitality students also play a vital role in the success of events from across the College including; Grandparents Morning Tea, Graduation, Café 107, Whadjuk Gift, the College Showcase, Community Fair and more.
Our Hospitality students compete in regional, national and international cooking competitions, with students in previous years being awarded medals in the World Skills Cooking Competition, Apprentice of the Year Cooking Competitions and The Culinary Olympics.
Food Science and Technology
Years 7 to 10
In Food Science and Technology students will have the opportunity to develop their cooking skills. This essential life skill develops in complexity over the years.
In Years 7 to 9, students will focus on health and nutrition, basic knife and cooking skills, hygiene and safety.
Moving into Year 10, students enhance their skills further, looking at café culture, coffee, the science of food and building their cooking repertoire.
Children, Family and the Community
Years 8 to 10
In Children, Family and the Community students will explore adolescence, pregnancy, babies, and child development from birth to five years, As the course moves to upper school it provides the students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of child development in a more with an emphasis on community and developmental theories.
Materials Design and Technology: Textiles
Years 8 to 10
Students learn about sewing and textiles through a variety of practical activities including hand and machine sewing techniques. Students investigate the properties and uses of fibres and fabrics, and the increasing impact clothing production has on the environment. As student’s skills develop, they have the opportunity to use over lockers, embroidery machines and the Cricut cutting machine to enhance the finish and professionalism of their hand sewn items and fashion garments.
Children, Family and the Community
Years 11 & 12
In Children, Family and the Community students will explore adolescence, pregnancy, babies, and child development from birth to five years, As the course moves to upper school it provides the students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of child development in a more with an emphasis on community and developmental theories.
The Children, Family and Community course is offered at both a General and ATAR level in Years 11 and 12, and is the perfect knowledge base for a wide variety of careers involving children.
Materials Design and Technology: Textiles General
Years 11 & 12
The Materials Design and Technology: Textiles General is a practical course with a focus on the design and manufacture of products using textiles. Students will design and make a variety of textile products including clothing and accessories.
In this course students will develop technical skills that will enable them to understand the properties of fibres and fabrics and the materials they are working with to produce garments and other textile products with precision and make appropriate choices for the best results.
This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the design process used to produce garments. Students will complete a number of practical projects during the course and will develop a portfolio showing their practical skills and understanding of design elements and processes. Students will learn about the fundamentals of design and how to apply these when creating new textiles products. Students will experiment with fabric embellishment techniques, such as beading, applique, dying, hand stitching and embroidery.
Students examine social and cultural values and the short-term and long-term impacts of the use and misuse of materials and associated technologies. Through this inquiry, experimentation and research, students develop their creativity and understanding of the society in which they live.
It aims to prepare all students for a future in a technological and material world by providing the foundation for lifelong learning about how products are designed and how materials are developed and used.
