Creative Technologies

Creative Technologies offers students from Years 7 to 12 opportunities to facilitate innovative student-driven projects that highlight their talents.

Mater Dei College offers a full suite of Creative Technologies, including Passion Project, Animation, Film and Photography, Graphics and Gaming Design, Digital Technologies and Design.

Through real-world problems embedded in the student experience, the Creative Technologies Learning Area aims to foster independent learners who value collaboration over competition.

Creativity is at the heart of this Learning Area, embodied through six core themes; Create, Make, Explore, Innovate, Imagine and Design.

One of the newest courses, the Passion Project was recently awarded Secondary Winner in the Education category at Catholic Education Western Australia’s 2022 Quality Catholic Education (QCE) Awards.

Digital Technology and Coding

Years 7 to 10

In Digital Technology and Coding, students will develop knowledge, skills and abilities to become creators of the future digital world rather than just users of it. Students will undertake programming and coding tasks using standard programming languages, computational thinking and computer science knowledge. They will explore the practise of coding and programming by creating products and solutions using project management skills such as apps and websites.

Gaming Design and Graphics

Years 7 to 10

In Gaming Design and Graphics, students will study video games and ESports. Students will design aspects of video games, worlds and characters and participate in class ESports tournaments. Teachers will mentor students through the design process to develop their design, presentational and interpersonal skills.

Film and Photography

Years 7 to 10

In Film and Photography, students have opportunities to view media work, consider the impact context and audience have on media work, and explore the impact of trends on how audiences use media. Students extend and refine their skills and processes for problem-solving and working as a team. Students will work within or across the following media: film, television, photography, print media or online media.

Animation and Special Effects

Years 7 to 10

In Animation and Special Effects, students will further develop their creative skills. The course teaches students how to create visual tricks and illusions used within popular films and how to create animations. Students will use a range of software to explore these techniques. Students will also learn how to create special effects through model-making and make-up techniques. Teachers will mentor students through creative skill development.

Passion Project

Years 7 to 10

Do you have a passion for something you don’t find in regular classes, a project or an idea? Would you like to engage in your own project, where teachers collaborate and mentor you as you work on your passion? The Passion Project does just that by helping you develop your idea for presentation.

Our Passion Project course was awarded Secondary Winner in the Education category at the Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) 2022 Quality Catholic Education (QCE) Awards and has recently been announced as an Excellence Awardee at the Australian Education Awards 2023 in the Grok Academy Innovation in Curriculum Design category.

Graphics

Years 8 to 10

In Graphics, students will immerse themselves in various graphic design projects. Students are coached and mentored by their teacher throughout the course. They don’t need to be good at drawing to select this subject. Students will learn a range of skills focused on how to build student confidence in creating posters, logos, sticker designs and various merchandise.

Design: Graphics ATAR

Years 11 & 12

The Design: Graphics ATAR course develops students’ creative skills with an ATAR pathway. Students will get the opportunity to work on two design projects. Projects can explore poster design, logo design, innovative packaging, sticker design, branding or a combination of these. Students also have access to 3D printers. Guest speakers and teachers will coach each student through the practical and theoretical sections of the course. This subject is excellent for those students wanting to explore creative projects.

Design: Graphics General

Years 11 & 12

The Design: Graphics General course develops students’ creative skills with a General pathway. Students will be able to work on two design projects during the course. Projects can explore poster design, logo design, creative packaging, sticker design, branding or a combination of these. Students also have access to 3D printers. Guest speakers and teachers will coach each student through this course. This subject is excellent for those students wanting to explore creative projects.
