Students have opportunities to talk online with other students of similar ages from both Japan and Indonesia, to learn how to cook traditional dishes and learn more widely about the two cultures.
Performing Arts
Mater Dei offers a diverse and exciting range of co-curricular opportunities in performing arts for students across Junior and Senior School. With outstanding drama productions and performances, an eclectic range of co-curricular music ensembles and instrumentals as well as competitive dance troupes/teams. There is something for everyone at Mater Dei College.
Music
There are five co-curricular music ensembles students may join: the Mater Dei College Concert Band, Rock Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Jazz Band and the Choir.
These ensembles are run before and after school and allow students to practice their musical talents and collaborate with other musicians. We offer many opportunities for our students to perform throughout the year, giving them a purpose behind their practice and experience playing in front of an audience.
Drama
The College produces a Production on a bi-annual basis.
Auditions are open to all Year 7 to 11 students, as well as incoming Year 6 students who are enrolled at the College for the following year. Not only do students have the opportunity to grace the stage, but they also can apply for a position in the backstage crew, or audition to play in the Band.
Successful auditionees in the cast also enjoy a three-month rehearsal period which commences with a three-day Production Camp before the commencement of the school year.
The College Production for 2023 is Back to the 80s!
Dance
There are two dance teams students may wish to join: the Senior Dei to Dance Team and Junior Dei to Dance Team.
These teams represent the College at numerous performing arts events and competitions throughout the year.
Service
The Mater Dei College community seeks to place value around the philosophy of never seeing a need without doing something about it.
Through the College Social Action Group, students are given the opportunity to reach out and help people in need by supporting Catholic organisations who fulfill this role in the community. This support mainly comes from fundraising.
Belonging to the Social Action Group ensures that students not only demonstrate compassion for those less fortunate than themselves, but also provides an excellent opportunity for personal growth. It is a fantastic way for students to become proactive leaders in their own community and foster a culture of service to others.
In Term 1, the focus for the Group is on supporting Project Compassion during Lent by conducting a face painting stall on Foundation Day.
In Terms 2 and 3, the Group runs a sausage sizzle during the Inter-House Athletics Carnival and a Homeroom gold coin donation drive to support the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Throughout Term 4, the Group coordinates the Christmas Hamper Appeal, where they sort and wrap hampers and gift vouchers donated by each Homeroom to pass on to St Vincent de Paul and other local charities the College supports.
