Scholarships and Bursaries

Mater Dei College awards a range of academic, music and sporting scholarships to students each year.

These scholarships are designed to recognise individual strengths and to support the needs of our growing community.

Working in conjunction with Aboriginal people to improve the educational experiences and career opportunities of Aboriginal youth, Mater Dei College offers the Ballaruk Bursary and educational support for Aboriginal students.

Academic Scholarships

Mater Dei College awards two types of Academic Scholarships. A full scholarship covers the student’s tuition fee only for three years, while a half scholarship covers 50% of the student’s tuition fee for three years.

Offered To

Academic Scholarships are offered to confirmed students commencing Year 7 in 2025 and students commencing Year 10 in 2025.  Students successful in gaining a scholarship in Year 7 will need to reapply for the Year 10 scholarship.

Process

  1. Application

Complete an Academic Scholarship Application Form for your child and return it to our Enrolments Officer via email enrolments@mdc.wa.edu.au before the closing date.

  1. Register for Scholarship Test

Register your child for scholarship tests through ACER.
Please note there is a $120 registration fee payable on the ACER website for Academic Scholarship testing.

  1. Take the Scholarship Test

Your child sits the Academic Scholarship test at the College on the morning of Saturday 25 May 2024.

  1. Outcome

Families will be notified of the outcome of their scholarship application typically by the end of Semester 1.

When To Apply

Applications for 2025 close on Wednesday 15 May 2024.

Music Scholarships

Mater Dei College offers several Music Scholarships to students. Successful applicants receive free instrumental tuition and instrument hire (if applicable) for one year in the student’s nominated instrument.

Offered To

Music Scholarships are offered to students in Years 7 to 11 who are currently receiving instrumental or vocal tuition at Mater Dei College and to confirmed students commencing Year 7 in 2025 who are currently receiving instrumental tuition in one of the instruments listed below:

  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Saxophone
  • Guitar
  • Bass Clarinet
  • Bass Guitar
  • Trumpet
  • French Horn
  • Trombone
  • Euphonium
  • Vocals (Singing)
  • Drums
  • Piano

Process

  1. Complete Application

Complete a Music Scholarship Application for your child and return it to the College Enrolments Officer via email enrolments@mdc.wa.edu.au before the closing date.

Music Scholarship Application Form 2025

  1. Audition and Interview

Based upon their application, your child will be invited to audition. At their audition, they will be required to perform two contrasting pieces, basic music scales, sight-read a short extract of music and answer a few questions.

Auditions will be held from 13 to 17 May, 2024.

  1. Outcome

Following their audition and short interview, parents will be notified of the outcome of their child’s scholarship application.

Applications for 2025 are now closed (closing date 19 April 2024).

Sporting Scholarships

Sporting scholarships for the AFL Academy and Basketball Academy cover half the student’s tuition fee only for three years, and does not include any other specific purpose charges or levies.

Offered To

This years’ scholarships for the AFL Academy and Basketball Academy are being offered to confirmed students who have gained entry into the Academy and are commencing Year 7 in 2025.

Basketball Academy

Process

  1. Complete Application

Complete and submit the online Basketball Scholarship Application for your child before the closing date.  Please note the closing dates and trial dates are different for AFL and Basketball.  Children are welcome to apply for both Academies.

  1. Skills & Gameplay Trial

Applicants will be required to attend a skills and game play trial.  The trials will be held after school and all registered applicants will be emailed details.

  1. Academy Selection
  • Director of Basketball will interview and trial applicants.
  • Director of Basketball will evaluate the student’s values and ethics.
  • Director of Basketball and Head of Physical Education will select students to enter the Basketball Academy.
  • Director of Basketball will make scholarship recommendations to the Principal.
  • Principal will make the final decision regarding scholarship recipients.
  1. Outcome

We will endeavour to notify parents of the outcome of their child’s scholarship application within 4-6 weeks of the trial date.

Basketball Academy Information

When To Apply

Applications for 2025 are now closed
23 May 2024: Closing date for Basketball Academy registration

Due to the keen interest in our trials, applicants have been invited to attend one of three trial days, to accommodate the enthusiastic turnout.

Trials will be held in the Bernie Boss Hall after school (3.30pm – 5.00pm).

AFL Academy

Process

  1. Complete Application

Complete and submit the AFL Scholarship Application for your child before the closing date.  Please note the closing dates and trial dates are different for AFL and Basketball.  Children are welcome to apply for both Academies.

  1. Skills & Gameplay Trial

Applicants will be required to attend a skills and game play trial.  The trials will be held after school and all registered applicants will be emailed details.

  1. Selection
    – Student’s skills and game play assessed for the Academy.
    – Academy staff evaluate the student’s values and ethics.
    – The AFL Academy Director will make scholarship recommendations to the Principal.
    – The Principal will decide the scholarship recipients and the decision is final.
  2. Outcome

All applicants will be notified of the Academy and Scholarship outcome by correspondence in Term 3 2024.

When To Apply

Applications for 2025 will open in Term 2 2024.
24 July 2024: Closing date for AFL Academy registration
30 July 2024: Trials will be held on the Mater Dei College oval after school (3.45pm – 5.30pm). All applicants will be notified of the trial details a few weeks prior to the trial date.

Ballaruk Bursary

Mater Dei College holds a commitment to providing an accessible quality education and works in conjunction with Aboriginal people to improve the educational experiences and career opportunities of Aboriginal youth by covering the cost of tuition fees. Mater Dei College offers the Ballaruk Bursary and educational support for Aboriginal students.  The bursary is intended to recognise the student’s commitment to schooling.

Offered To

The Ballaruk Bursary is available to current and prospective students at the College and will cover the cost of tuition fees. Applicants must be Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and have a desire to be educated in the Catholic Education system.  This will be evident through the student’s attendance at school, a commitment to learning and involvement in College activities and community events.  It is expected that applicants have established strong foundations for learning and aspire to complete Year 12.

When To Apply

Parents and guardians of eligible students are invited to lodge an application as early as possible as the number of bursaries is limited.
