The Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. The syllabus is organised around the interaction of the three content strands with four proficiency strands: Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving, and Reasoning. These describe how content is explored and developed.

Students in Year 9 Mathematics at Mater Dei College are streamed into 3 Pathways based on their mathematical ability and their final ranking in Year 8 Mathematics.

Pathway 1: seeks to extend the more able mathematics students and engage them by providing opportunities to apply familiar skills and concepts to both routine and non-routine problems.

Pathway 2: delivers the content of the Western Australian Curriculum with a particular focus on the judging standards at the Year 9 level.

Pathway 3: is designed to assist students to broaden their mathematical skills. The focus is on improving numeracy and filling the gaps in their understanding that may have contributed to misunderstandings over previous years of study.
