Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance wherever I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly, that my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me, and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up and see no longer me, but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.
The light, O Jesus, will be all from You; none of it will be mine.
It will be you, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise You the way You love best, by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching, not by words but by my example, by the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do,
the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.
Amen.

Blessed Cardinal Newman

This prayer was prayed every morning by St Teresa of Calcutta and still prayed every day by her sisters after morning Mass.

Mater Dei Respectful Relationships

Throughout term four, all students at the College have been participating in PCG programs on healthy relationships. Topics ranged from how to treat people with respect, forming and maintaining good friendships, respectful relationships and how to deal with unhealthy relationships. Through our Year 10 relationships program, students have learnt about domestic violence, the cycle of violence, types of abuse, how to identify controlling and abusive relationships and where to go to for help. This week, our year 10 group concluded this program with their own White Ribbon Day, where they made their individual pledge to end violence against women in the community.

Saturday November 25 is White Ribbon Day, an international event that seeks to increase awareness of the issue of violence in a bid to end violence against women in the community. Mater Dei College is a White Ribbon School, and as such, we see an emphasis on respectful relationships as an important step towards preventing domestic violence in the future. Congratulations to our year 10’s on their participation in the program this term.

Year 10 Biology

Our Year 10 Biology class is currently studying genetics, inheritance and how mutations can be beneficial for the survival of a species. In one of our lessons, students were divided into groups and allocated a hypothetical mutation. Each member of the group then had to find their food source, move it to a secure location, unwrap each food item and then consume it. Needless to say, some mutations made this task easier than others, but all groups managed to complete it in the allocated time, so there were no deaths due to starvation this time round! Students quickly understood how beneficial mutations give a survival advantage to some individuals and as a result, gives them the opportunity to not only survive, but to live to reproductive age and pass on those beneficial mutations to their offspring. Survival of the fittest at its best, especially when enticing Year 10 students with gummy bears!

Find out which occupations have skills shortages

Choosing a job in an industry where they need more workers is usually a smart decision. Right now, most professions are adequately supplied with large numbers of qualified candidates competing for vacancies. There are shortages for architects, surveyors, sonographers, audiologists and veterinarians, and many trades need more qualified people.
