Dei to Dei
Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff of Mater Dei College,
It is hard to believe we are at the end of Term 3. Throughout the past fortnight we have celebrated a number of successes including the very sound result of our athletes competing in the B Division ACC Athletics carnival. Our Mater Dei team did very well overall, in addition, four students were awarded Age Champions. Congratulations to the following Age Champions: Nathan French (Open Boys), Martina Bossert (U16 Girls), Tahli Arbuckle (U15 Girls) and Noah Farrow (U14 Boys). Well done to Ms Wheeler, coaches, staff and the ACC team.
The College Open Afternoon was very well attended on Monday, 11 September. The student guides were excellent ambassadors of the College with many guests commenting on their beautiful manners and friendliness. Thank you to the Heads of Learning Areas and staff for coordinating the diverse range of activities to showcase the many opportunities at the College. My sincere thanks to Mrs Angela Lourens, Enrolment Officer and Mrs Tamara Boyer, Deputy Principal for their overall coordination of the Open Afternoon.
The Year 7 students enjoyed hosting Grandparents Day on Friday, 8 September. Our Grandparents had an opportunity to view the Creative Arts Showcase, morning tea and entertainment from the College Band and Dance Group. Thank you to Ms Danielle Hodgson Year 7 Coordinator, staff and hospitality students for a lovely morning.
The health and wellbeing of our students has been a focus this term with RUOK? Day last week and the Wellbeing Week a few weeks ago. Families should have received an electronic letter this week about the introduction of an Animal Assisted Therapy Program at the College next term. LJ is a 6-year-old Maltese cross and has been assessed by an RSPCA dog trainer and found to be suitable to interact with small children under the supervision of his guardian Ms Janine Hanlon one of our Counselling Staff. Please refer to the letter for more information about this wellbeing service.
The Mater Dei College Foundation students celebrate their 20-year reunion this school holidays on Saturday, 7 October. Past staff including Foundation Principal Mr Bernie Boss and the graduating class of 1997 are meeting at the College in the Treetop Café for an evening of reminiscence. I look forward to sharing photographs with the College community particularly in the lead up to our 25th anniversary next year!
Thank you to the families who have referred new families to the College. Congratulations to Mrs Tiella Turkovic, the winner of the Refer a Friend Competition.
At this time of the year we are planning for the year ahead. In the past week I have appointed two important leadership positions in the College to commence in January 2018; the Head of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Head of Mathematics. The current Head of Mathematics, Mr Peter Roberts will remain with Mater Dei College as an experienced classroom teacher after his decision to finish in the role of Head of Mathematics. I thank Mr Roberts for many years of leadership of the Mathematics Learning Area. I was particularly pleased with the calibre of the applicants for both leadership positions. At the commencement of Term 1 2018 we will welcome: Ms Nadia Tatonetti as Head of Humanities. Ms Tatonetti currently works at Chisholm Catholic College. Mr Matthew Kameron has been appointed as Head of Mathematics. Mr Kameron is currently Deputy Associate Principal at Peter Moyes Anglican Community College.
Staff were informed this week of the departure of Mrs Grayden at the end of Term 4. Mrs Grayden has been appointed as Leader of the Arts (PK – 12) at Newman College commencing 2018. This is a very exciting opportunity for Mrs Grayden to lead a large PK-12 College is the field of Arts. Congratulations Mrs Grayden. The students will have an opportunity to farewell Mrs Grayden at the end of the year.
In closing I wish all Year 12 students well for the upcoming examinations in the holidays and I hope all families have a restful and safe break. Please remember students are to return to the College on Monday 9 October dressed in summer uniform.
