Materials

Students design and produce a Serving Tray.  This project introduces new skills of laminating materials, complex design and material selection.  Finishing, application of various surface finishes and surface preparation.  Students put these new skills into action, in the design and production of their own Serving Tray. Students design and produce a child’s toy.  This project introduces new skills of designing for a client, complex design and material selection.  Finishing, application of various surface finishes and surface preparation.  Students put these new skills into action, in the design and production of their own Child’s Toy, which can be donated to charity.  Design and produce your own writing pen, using lathe skills on a variety of exciting different materials.  Production of a portfolio in which students investigate, explore ideas and follow a design process in response to a design brief.  Students are required to evaluate the final solution’s effectiveness for specific purposes and audiences.

Engineering

Students design and manufacture a Balsa wood dragster. This project introduces advanced skills of shaping materials, complex design and material selection. Finishing - surface preparation and application of various surface finishes. Students put these new skills into action, in the design and production of their own Dragster. The effectiveness of the design will be tested on a 20m race track with electronic time keeping. Propulsion system for the vehicle is a CO2 cannister. Production of a portfolio in which students investigate, explore dragster racing aspects, create ideas and follow a design process in response to a design brief. Students are required to evaluate the final solution’s effectiveness in design, shape, decoration and speed.

Graphics

Students get the opportunity to create 2D and 3D projects. It is a fun course designed to foster each student’s abilities. Students will be able to use computer software to enhance their ideas and designs (i.e. poster, sticker and logo designs) including the use of 3D printers. Teachers will mentor the students through this course, they don’t have to be good drawers to select this subject. Students have the opportunity to work with exciting design software.
